About Ajmer
The town of Ajmer is located at about 135 kilometers southwest of Jaipur, the capital city of Rajasthan and is the most sacred Muslim pilgrimage center in India. The Dargah-e-Sharif (Tomb) of Khawaja Moin-ud-din Chisti, a revered Sufi saint of the 12th century, is frequented by thousands of devout Muslims along with people of other faiths all round the year. The construction of this beautiful white marvel shrine was started by the Mughal king, Humayun and completed by Akbar, the great Mughal Emperor of the 16th century. Akbar used to make a pilgrimage to Ajmer every year from Agra. While at Ajmer you can also visit the nearby attractions of Pushkar, a famous Hindu Pilgrimage center.

Attraction of Ajmer

Ajmer-e- Sharif Dargah
The Dargah Sharif, located at the foot of a barren hill, is the place where the Khawaja Moin-ud-din Chistis' mortal remains lie buried. The Dargah (tomb) with a marble dome is situated in the center of a courtyard and is surrounded by a silver platform. It's believed that the shrine is a place of wish fulfillment for those who pray with devout and pure hearts. People of all religious faiths visit the Dargah and make offerings of rose and jasmine flowers to seek the blessings of the Khawaja. More than a half a million devotees from the subcontinent visit the Dargah to pay homage to Khawaja on Urs, the death anniversary of Khawaja. It's said that the revered saint left for heavenly abode after a six-day prayer in seclusion and for this their devotees celebrate 'Urs' every year during the first six days of Rajjab, the 7th month of the Islamic calendar.

One of the main attractions at the Dargah is the qawwali programs organized during the famous annual 'Urs' festival. Professional singers called 'qawwals' sing songs in praise of the saint in a characteristic high-pitched voice. The 'Sufiana kalam' sung by these artists make a spellbound effect on listeners prompting them to clap to the rhythm of musical instruments.

Other major attractions for visitors of Ajmer are Adhai-Din-Ka-Jhonpra (two-and-a-half-day mosque) built by Allauddin Khilji of the Delhi Sultanant, the Ana Sagar Lake, the Taragarh Fort, Daulat Khana, Daulat Bagh, and the Nasiyan Jain Temple.

Air : Nearest Airport Jaipur is Jaipur (138 kms).

Rail: Ajmer is connected by rail to Delhi, Agra, Ahmedabad, Barmer, Bharatpur, Bikaner, Jaipur, Jodhpur, Mount Abu and to Bombay Via Ahmedabad.

Road: Ajmer is well connected by road with Agra (370 km), Bharatpur (312 km), Bikaner (234 km), Bundi (139 km), Chittaurgarh (182 km), Delhi (444 km), Jaipur (138 km), Jaisalmer (458 km), Jodhpur (205 km), Kota (178 km), Mount Abu (371 km) and Udaipur (269 km).
